What do Your favourite Books say about You?

Reading as a pastime

One of my very favourite things has always been to curl up and lose myself in a book if I have a few hours to spare. I've never been one of those chapter before sleeping type of readers, if I start a book I have to have a few hours ahead of me so that I can read it in one sitting, (with the odd very short stop to make coffee or food - which more often than not finds me reading as I'm doing this lol).

Needless to say, these days I rarely get to indulge myself, too many calls on my time even when working from home..

I've sometimes wondered quite why I should find reading so absorbing and relaxing, and always come back to the fact that it's my way of escape from lifes stresses, other people may meditate or exercise, give me the right kind of book and I'm sorted..

For me the right sort of book is a crime thriller of some kind, although I do appreciate a bit of a love story or some kind of bonding relationship thrown in. I adore pretty much anything by David Baldacci, Patricia Cornwell, Lisa Gardner, Jeffrey Deaver, Wilbur Smith and a host of others but those are the names that jump out at me first when I'm prowling a bookshop or library.

I also love some Robert Ludlum, John Grisham, Lisa Scottolini and Lee Childs. As you can see, my favourite writing style is crime suspense, I guess. I'm interested in conspiracy theories, crime investigations and offender profiling, don't mind pathology and court room dramas but hate too much gruesome description of the actual crime in progress. Can't stand reading about true crimes either. I also enjoy landscape and culture description hence the Wilbur Smith link..

Moving on from that, it fascinates me to think what my choice of reading matter might say about my personality?  Definitely gives food for thought doesn't it?

The Simple Truth - first David Baldacci book I read

This was my introduction to David Baldacci and I've never been disappointed in any of his books since!

So What Does Our Choice of Reading Matter Say About Us?

And are we prepared to discuss that? :)

I get bored easily so I think that's one of the reasons that I like the kind of books I do, I don't like to be able to second guess the author too easily, yet I also don't like it when the hero or heroine dies, that offends my sense of justice or something, it certainly spoils the book for me!

There was only one Wilbur Smith book that I came across where the heroine fell in love with the lovable rogue but wouldn't admit it to herself and did nothing to stop him from being hanged for his crimes, although he was the 'bad' guy, I found his character much more appealing and sympathetic than the true 'hero' came across and never forgave her for not standing by her love for the more complex and layered character - not sure what that says about me exactly, or not sure that I'm willing to write down here what I think that says about me lol :)

I think the reason I like to read a romance within a crime thriller is because it's easier to suspend belief about the lovers reactions to each other in a highly stressed situation than in a run of the mill love story. Somehow all those heightened emotions make sense in a highly stressed context so you can imagine people acting out of character somewhat or being drawn to someone they would otherwise find ways to avoid..

Deb,

great article. I am also an avid reader also. I love to read true crime mostly since my JD will be Criminal justice with a major in forensics. I also love literature, my favorite being "William Faulkner", especially "A Rose For Miss Emily". Like yourself I can't just read a chapter or two, I usually manange about 2 books a day, big books. It takes me away from the stresses of everyday life...into another world.

Warmest regards,

chris

Thanks Chris, much appreciated and I know just what you mean about books taking you into another world :)

I've recently started reading some historical novels, especially Roman history, Ben Kane is rapidly becoming another of my favourite authors lol. I haven't read any William Faulkner, shall have to look out for him, thanks for the suggest.
